Home-based Instruction will be made available to students who are at high-risk for severe illness pertaining to COVID-19, which would prevent normal school attendance. Students receiving Home-based Instruction may not participate in school-sponsored events. Home-based Instruction eligibility will be evaluated quarterly. The goal of Home-based Instruction is to keep the student current with classroom instruction until the student is able to return to a classroom setting. Home-based Instruction is not intended to replace school services and is, by design, temporary. It is not a remediation program and is not designed to provide students with time to make up previously missed assignments.

Instructional Support

  • Instructional support is provided for all academic classes.
  • Instruction, assignments and materials will be provided by the classroom teacher via online platforms (i.e., Seesaw, Moodle, and Teams); therefore, students must have access to technology and internet connectivity.
  • Based on a five-day school week, Upper School students are generally provided a minimum of two (2) hours of instructional services per week for each course. Lower School students are generally provided with a minimum of five (5) hours of instructional services per five-day school week.
  • Instructional services may include direct instruction via live video feed or pre-recorded video, guided practice, independent practice, or project-based instruction.
  • Home-based Instruction is designed to prevent the student from falling significantly behind in coursework. It is necessary for the student to participate in the instructional process and complete and submit assignments on or before the assigned due dates.
  • Home-based Instruction is delivered during regular school hours only on those days when school is in session.
  • Every effort will be made to ensure academic progress; however, course credit must still be earned according to class requirements (see Figure 1).

Figure 1

Home-based Instruction IS:

  • Designed so that the student does not fall significantly behind during the period of confinement
  • Interactive; the student is expected to participate in the instructional process and complete assignments
  •  Intended to make every effort to ensure academic progress

Home-based Instruction IS NOT:

  • Intended to supplant school services
  • A substitute for course credit that must be earned according to class requirements
  • A guarantee that specialty classes (i.e.,requiring labs, special facilities or equipment) will be comparable
  • A guarantee of on-time graduation; all diploma requirements must be met for graduation

Grading

  • Completed assignments will be submitted to the classroom teacher.
  • The classroom teacher is the teacher of record and is responsible for assigning and grading all
  • student work.
  • Every effort will be made to ensure academic progress; however, course credit must still be earned according to class requirements.

Tests

  • The classroom teacher(s) and Home-based Instruction Coordinator will collaborate to arrange

dates and times for the administration of required testing.

Responsibilities

  • Successful Home-based Instruction depends on the coordination and collaboration of a number of individuals. The responsibilities of each of these individuals are summarized below:

Students receiving Home-based Instruction are expected to return to school-based instruction as soon as possible. The Home-based Instruction Coordinator will assist the student, family, and school personnel with the student’s transition back to the classroom setting.

2. Home-based Instruction Coordinator reviews and recommends student to the appropriate principal for approval.

3. Principal makes eligibility determination for Home-based Instruction and notifies Home-based Instruction Coordinator of determination.

4. Home-based Instruction Coordinator:

  •  Notifies parents/student of eligibility for Home-based Instruction and, if eligible, reviews procedures for Home-based Instruction.
  • Notifies teacher(s) of student eligibility to initiate instruction.
